"In
short, it's probably the most advanced underwater
lighting system now on the market."
"How do you improve
a dive light? Make it smaller - or brighter - or both. This is exactly
what NiteRider has done with the HID Dive Light, which, thanks to
a pair of new technologies, produces more light and burns longer
than conventional systems twice its size.
The first key to this light's performance is the use of a high-intensity
discharge (HID) bulb, which produces a brilliant blue-white light
while using far less battery power than a conventional bulb of the
same brightness. The NiteRider HID uses a 10-watt, 13.2-volt system
that produces the equivalent light of a conventional 50-watt incandescent
bulb. In addition, the HID burns hotter, producing a full-spectrum
6,000-degree color temperature that is close to sunlight.
The other technology that NiteRider has brought to underwater dive
lights is the use of latest-generation nickel-metal hydride batteries,
which pack far more power on a per-ounce basis than conventional
alkaline or NiCad cells. Compared to an equivalent NiCad pack, NiteRider's
nickel-metal hydride system delivers a third longer burn time (four
hours), weighs 30 percent less and has a shorter recharge time.
Like other NiteRider lights, the
HID is housed in a compact, impact-resistant casing, with the battery
attached by way of a flexible cable. A variety of attachment systems
allow the light to be handheld, worn as a headlamp or mounted on
a diving helmet, safety reel or even a DPV. As you might guess from
these mounting options, the NiteRider system is popular with technical
and commercial divers.
I tested the HID on a series of
dives in a local lake, with the objective of locating and raising
a metal pipeline. The compact battery pack mounted easily on my
BC cummerbund and was just slightly negative in fresh water. During
the search phase, I wore the light on a hand mount, then switched
to the head mount when it was time to deploy the lift bags. The
HID was considerably brighter than my dive buddy's conventional
handheld light, and its blue-white beam seemed to carry farther
than the yellowish glow his produced.
Technical divers, commercial divers
and wanna-be salvors such as myself will embrace the NiteRider HID
with enthusiasm, but it would also make a heck of a primary light
for night diving and for video work. In short,
it's probably the most advanced underwater lighting system now on
the market. - Pierce Hoover
Summary New battery and bulb
technologies allow the HID to burn brighter and last longer than
conventional dive lights. If you need a compact, high-performance
underwater lighting system for work, exploration or just for fun,
this is it." 2002 World Publications, LLC

History of NiteRider Dive Lights
In the summer of 1989, Tom Carroll, a
Del Mar California surfer/diver found that working full time took
a serious chunk out of his water time. To rectify this problem,
he set out to extend his day by way of a 150 watt helmet-mounted
halogen light with a NiCad battery pack attached to his waist belt.
He called it his "NiteRider" and used it for late night surfing
sessions and spearfishing forays. Tom took this concept a step further
by starting a successful business around the idea of a "hands-free"
underwater lighting system.
Among Tom's first clients were the Cousteau Dive
Team. Which included Jean-Michel Cousteau who, after ten years,
still use these lighting systems for their expeditions. No matter
what the situation calls for, NiteRider delivers the clearest, brightest
light available right where you need it. Why? As with all of our
systems, NiteRider innovations start with the headlamp. This high-tech
light head is compact, lightweight, and completely waterproof. Made
of a rugged fiberglass-nylon composite, the shell can be fitted
with a light output range from 5w to 70w.The 4-position headlamp
mounted switch on the Dual-Beam system allows you to move easily
from one lamp to the other or use them together. To power up these
incredibly bright light systems, we offer the long-lasting, high-quality
Nickel-Cadmium or a new Nickel Metal Hydride battery pack. These
super-tough power packs provide high power and reliability for the
toughest applications and the harshest conditions. |
