Like other NiteRider lights, the HID is housed in a compact, impact-resistant casing, with the battery attached by way of a flexible cable. A variety of attachment systems allow the light to be handheld, worn as a headlamp or mounted on a diving helmet, safety reel or even a DPV. As you might guess from these mounting options, the NiteRider system is popular with technical and commercial divers. I tested the HID on a series of dives in a local lake, with the objective of locating and raising a metal pipeline. The compact battery pack mounted easily on my BC cummerbund and was just slightly negative in fresh water. During the search phase, I wore the light on a hand mount, then switched to the head mount when it was time to deploy the lift bags. The HID was considerably brighter than my dive buddy's conventional handheld light, and its blue-white beam seemed to carry farther than the yellowish glow his produced. Technical divers, commercial divers and wanna-be salvors such as myself will embrace the NiteRider HID with enthusiasm, but it would also make a heck of a primary light for night diving and for video work.
